Silver Star has been located in Ottawa since 2003, Seabrook & Associates clients joined us in 2010 and summer 2013, we revisited what Silver Star Swag would need in order to continue to grow with our clients. In 2015, we relocated our offices to the downtown core of Ottawa where we share space with the Great River Media, known for publishing the Ottawa Business Journal, and many other top notch publications in print and online.

Silver Star was acquired by The Branding Company in May 2015. The Branding Company is an international promotional marketing company servicing global licensing and promotional agreements.

The added infrastructure offers Silver Star and its clients the support to; deliver branded promotional programs, years of services and employee recognition programs, custom design, complete print on demand capabilities, warehousing and fulfillment along with incentive initiatives that are measurable and executable, With more than 30 + years of experience in the promotional management area. Ottawa Business Events recently asked Silver Star Swag to find a Thank you gift for the first executive to present at its new Speakers’ Series for the top executives, called CEO Talk. First one up, Mr. Roger Greenberg – no small feat to be asked to come up with a gift that might interest/engage a high-level executive, let alone a “TITAN” like Mr. Greenberg. What do you get a now Executive Chair with diverse projects on the go – one of them being the formidable Lansdowne Park project in conjunction with OSEG’s new Red Blacks! I have to say that from a SWAG point of view, Society has done a bang-up job convincing us that we need to run out and acquire some pink and red coloured something to ensure our loved ones know they are loved. That’s right – that makes our second national award! Bring it on 2014! What a great night, as the National Promotional Products Professionals Association recognizes the leaders in the industry for their creativity and impact on the bottom line. (that’s right – effective swag- who knew, eh?)

Marvellous Mary Ann

Our New Site is up and while it still needs some tweaking, there is just never enough time – If we were cobblers, we would likely have shoes in need of repair. Just back from the trade show with about 1 hours worth of photos, a mittful of great ideas for clients and a brain brimming with potential award winners for next year! As it was my first National Show since joining the Talbot family, they really made us feel welcome. We spent some time with the other Strategists from across the Company and Country and made some great connections. – they truly are a wonderful group of people. Another bonus – (aside from the National Award) We got to spend some time with Marvellous Mary Ann, our Order Manager within Talbot! (see photo) She’s the one who gets it done – from the finest details to the tightest deadlines, she is the Maven of Swag. Thank you Mary Ann

December Newsletter – Part Deux

Part Deux…of Things we will all think to ourselves!

In honour of all those who have kept us from enjoying ourselves over the Holidays of the past…these last 5 points are for you! 6. Under no circumstances should you exercise between now and New Year’s. You can do that in January when you have nothing else to do. This is the time for long naps, which you’ll need after circling the buffet table while carrying a 10-pound plate of food and that vat of eggnog. 7. If you come across something really good at a buffet table, like frosted Christmas cookies in the shape and size of Santa, position yourself near them and don’t budge. Have as many as you can before becoming the center of attention. They’re like a beautiful pair of shoes. You can’t leave them behind. You’re not going to see them again. 8. Same for pies. Apple. Pumpkin. Mincemeat. Have a slice of each. Or, if you don’t like mincemeat, have two apples and one pumpkin. Always have three. When else do you get to have more than one dessert? Labor Day? 9. Did someone mention fruitcake? Granted, it’s loaded with the mandatory celebratory calories, but avoid it at all cost. I mean, have some standards, mate. 10. And one final tip: If you don’t feel terrible when you leave the party or get up from the table, you haven’t been paying attention. Reread tips. Start over. But hurry! **Things we will all think to ourselves this Holiday!**

I hate aspects of this time of year. Not for its crass commercialism and forced frivolity, but because it’s the season when the food police come out with their wagging fingers and annual tips on how to get through the holidays without gaining 10 pounds. Assembled are five of the top ten points we have to say about that…1. About those carrot sticks. Avoid them. Anyone who puts carrots on a holiday buffet table knows nothing of the Christmas spirit. In fact, if you see carrots, leave immediately. Go next door, where they’re serving rum balls. 2. Drink as much eggnog as you can. And quickly. Like fine single-malt scotch, it’s rare. In fact, it’s even rarer than single-malt scotch. You can’t find it any other time of year but now. So drink up! Who cares that it has 10,000 calories in every sip? It’s not as if you’re going to turn into an eggnogaholic or something. It’s a treat. Enjoy it. Have one for me. Have two. It’s later than you think. It’s Christmas! 3. If something comes with gravy, use it. That’s the whole point of gravy. Gravy does not stand alone. Pour it on. Make a volcano out of your mashed potatoes. Fill it with gravy. Eat the volcano. Repeat. 4. As for mashed potatoes, always ask if they’re made with skim milk or whole milk. If it’s skim, pass. Why bother? It’s like buying a sports car with an automatic transmission. 5. Do not have a snack before going to a party in an effort to control your eating. The whole point of going to a Christmas party is to eat other people’s food for free. Lots of it. Hello? Its Not About the Pen

I get teased about this all the time by those close to me… It’s Not About the Pen You see my email signature includes the line “It’s Not about the Pen” not because I don’t like pens… but because of something I inherently knew. People won’t always remember what you said but they will always remember how you made them feel. You see, that’s what we believe this business is about – making people feel valued – important – connected. The swag itself is just the vehicle – not the message itself. Whether its a T-shirt that makes them smile – “GOT JUNK” (done for AIM Recycling Centers, or a Journal with the recipients name on it – for Unconventional Planning, the success comes from the emotion, not the gift. So you see, it really isn’t about the “pen”.

Our first decade…

As the Rebel Leader at Silver Star, I want to create a small firm that is very good at delivering business impact via swag. That means not just cheap and cheerful giveaways but product that molds the intent of the buyer – sways them in our direction and gets them on our side. We’ve been running independently in Ottawa since 2003, Seabrook Clients joins us in 2013 and in summer of 2013 after being invited to sit at the ‘grown up’ table by a pair of key clients, I revisited what Silver Star Swag would need in order to continue to grow with her clients (yes, I was raised a sailor – so like a boat, Silver Star is a girl). So in Fall 2013, Talbot Marketing of London, Ontario came on board to provide us with their 125+ years of expertise in promotional products, in particular warehousing, online stores, graphics services and took a HUGE load of in administration that was curbing our ability to be progressive and attentive to our clients, prospects and their projects – in short, we needed to stay focused on our core and shed anything not mission critical.
